Local customers want to know who is behind the business they are about to trust with their money. Posts that feature a real owner or team member consistently earn more comments, shares, and inquiries than posts with only logos and stock graphics. The problem is that many owners feel awkward on camera and avoid it completely. The good news is that being comfortable on camera is a skill you can build in small steps. Here are five ways to get started without feeling like you have to become an influencer.

1. Start With Your Voice and Your Hands

You do not have to jump straight into a talking head video. Begin by recording your hands working, such as plating a dish, trimming a plant, or fitting a customer, while you speak a simple voiceover. This builds the habit of sharing your expertise out loud and lets customers connect with your personality before your face ever appears. After a few posts, you will be surprised how natural it feels to step into the frame.

2. Use a Simple Script With Three Beats

Most camera nerves come from not knowing what to say. Write a tiny script with three beats: a one sentence hook, one useful tip or story, and one friendly next step. For example, introduce yourself, share a common mistake customers make, and invite them to message you with questions. Keep the whole video under 30 seconds so there is less to remember and less to edit.

3. Record Several Takes and Pick the Best One

Give yourself permission to be bad at first. Record the same short video three or four times in a row and choose the one that feels most relaxed. Your first take is usually stiff, and by the third you will often sound more like yourself. Nobody sees the discarded takes, so there is no pressure to get it perfect.

4. Set Up a Comfortable Filming Spot

A good environment makes you feel more confident. Stand near a window for soft natural light, prop your phone at eye level, and film somewhere that shows your real workspace, like your shop floor, studio, or storefront. Being in a place you know well helps you relax, and it gives viewers a genuine look at your business at the same time.

5. Build a Repeatable Routine

Confidence grows with repetition. Pick one day a week for a quick face-to-camera post, such as a Monday welcome, a Friday tip, or a short answer to a customer question. Over time your audience will start to expect and enjoy seeing you, and every video will feel easier than the last. Consistency matters far more than polish.

Showing your face is one of the fastest ways to earn trust with local customers, and you can start small today.
