The Daily Social: How to Use Keywords in Your Captions to Show Up in Social Media Search
By Curtis Carpenter, Founder, Vero Beach Social Media

More and more people now type what they need directly into the search bar on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook instead of Google. Someone new to Vero Beach might search for a dog groomer, a Friday happy hour, or a boat detailer right inside the app. If your captions only say things like 'so excited for this one' or use nothing but emojis, those searches will never find you. The good news is that showing up in social search does not require a big budget. It requires using the right words in the right places. Here is how to do it.
1. Figure Out What Your Customers Actually Type
Start by listing the plain-language phrases a customer would use to find a business like yours. Think 'family dentist Vero Beach' or 'wedding florist Treasure Coast' rather than clever slogans. Open the search bar on Instagram or TikTok, start typing your service, and note the suggested searches that appear. Those suggestions are real phrases people are using, and they make an excellent keyword list.
2. Put Your Main Keyword in the First Line of the Caption
Social platforms read the beginning of your caption more heavily than the end, and so do people skimming their feed. Lead with a sentence that naturally includes your main keyword and your location, for example 'Looking for a mobile car detailer in Vero Beach? Here is what a full interior detail looks like.' It reads like a real sentence, it tells the reader exactly what the post is about, and it gives the algorithm something to match against.
3. Say the Keyword Out Loud and Put It in Your Video Text
Instagram and TikTok transcribe the audio in your videos and scan the on-screen text you add. That means saying 'best breakfast spot in Vero Beach' in the first few seconds of a Reel and adding the same phrase as a text overlay gives you two more chances to be indexed. Keep it natural. One clear mention beats repeating the phrase five times and sounding robotic.
4. Update Your Name Field and Bio With Search Terms
The name field on your profile is one of the most searchable spots on the entire platform, and most small businesses waste it by only listing their business name. Change it to something like 'Coastal Cuts | Vero Beach Barber' so the service and the location are both searchable. Then work one or two of your core keywords into the first line of your bio in a way that still sounds human.
5. Use Alt Text and Descriptive Hashtags
Before you publish a post on Instagram, open the advanced settings and write a short alt text description that includes your keyword, such as 'Fresh grouper sandwich at a waterfront restaurant in Vero Beach.' Then add three to five hashtags that describe the content plainly, like #VeroBeachRestaurant or #TreasureCoastEats, instead of vague tags like #blessed. Descriptive tags act like extra keywords that help search understand your post.
6. Check Your Insights for Search Traffic
Once you start optimizing, look at your post insights every couple of weeks. Instagram shows how many views came from search and explore rather than your followers, and TikTok labels search traffic in its analytics. When a certain phrase brings in new visitors, build more content around it. When a phrase gets nothing, swap it out and test another.
Social search optimization is one of the simplest ways for a small business to reach brand-new local customers without spending a dime on ads.
