The Daily Social: How to Write Scroll-Stopping Hooks for Your Short-Form Videos

The Daily Social by Vero Beach Social Media

The first three seconds of a short-form video decide everything. On Reels, TikTok, and Shorts, viewers scroll fast, and if your opening does not grab them, the algorithm stops showing your video to new people. The good news is that strong hooks follow patterns you can learn. Here are five ways small businesses can open videos that make people stop and watch.

1. Lead With the Problem You Solve

People keep watching when a video speaks to something they care about. Open by naming a frustration your customer feels, such as "Tired of your photos looking dull?" or "Struggling to get reviews?" When viewers recognize their own problem in your first line, they stay to hear the solution.

2. Promise a Clear Payoff

Tell viewers exactly what they will gain by watching to the end. Phrases like "Here are three quick ways to..." or "Save this before you..." set a clear expectation and a reason to keep watching. A specific promise almost always beats a vague one, so name the number and the benefit.

3. Use Pattern Interrupts

Movement, a bold on-screen caption, or an unexpected first image stops a thumb mid-scroll. Start mid-action rather than with a slow introduction. Skip the "Hey guys, welcome back" opener and jump straight into the most interesting moment, then explain as you go.

4. Ask a Question Worth Answering

A sharp question pulls viewers in because the brain wants to resolve it. Try "Did you know most small businesses post at the wrong time?" The key is making it relevant and a little surprising, so people watch to find out whether they are getting it wrong too.

5. Show the Result First

If you have a great before and after, lead with the after. Let people see the finished room, the glowing review, or the packed event in the opening frame, then rewind to show how you got there. Curiosity about the how keeps them watching.

Great hooks are a skill, not luck, and a little planning before you hit record makes a huge difference.
