The Daily Social: How to Design Reel Cover Images That Get More Taps From Local Customers
By Curtis Carpenter, Founder, Vero Beach Social Media
Your Reel cover image is the first thing a local customer sees on your profile, in the Reels tab, and in search results. A great video with a blurry or random cover frame often gets skipped. A clear, branded cover tells people exactly what they will get and makes them far more likely to tap. The good news is you do not need design skills or expensive software. Here are five simple ways to create Reel covers that earn more taps.
1. Pick a Clear, Well Lit Frame
Scrub through your video and choose a frame that is sharp, bright, and easy to understand at a glance. Avoid frames where someone is mid blink or the image is blurry. A smiling face, a finished product, or a clear action shot works well. If nothing in the video looks right, record a two second still moment at the start just for the cover.
2. Add a Short Text Headline
Three to five words of large text can explain your Reel before anyone presses play. Try phrases like 'Easy Lunch Ideas' or 'Before and After Facial'. Use a bold, readable font and strong contrast so the words stand out even on a small phone screen. Keep the message simple and focused on the benefit to the viewer.
3. Stay Inside the Profile Grid Safe Zone
Profile grids now crop covers into a tall rectangle, so important text near the edges can get cut off. Keep your face, product, and headline in the center of the frame. Before posting, preview how the cover looks on your grid and make sure nothing important is trimmed.
4. Use Consistent Colors and Fonts
When every cover uses the same fonts and brand colors, your profile looks polished and instantly recognizable. Create one simple template in a free design app and reuse it for every Reel. Consistency builds trust and helps returning customers spot your content quickly in a busy feed.
5. Test, Track, and Refresh
Look at which Reels get the most views compared to your follower count and notice which cover styles they share. You can edit a cover after posting, so refresh older Reels that underperformed with a clearer frame or better headline. Small tweaks often bring a second wave of views.
Strong Reel covers make your profile look professional and turn more scrollers into customers. If you would like help creating a cover template or managing your Reels from start to finish, contact Vero Beach Social Media at curtis@verobeachsocialmedia.com and we will be glad to help.
