Giveaways can fill your page with followers overnight, but most of those followers disappear the moment the prize is gone. The goal for a small business is not a bigger number. It is a group of local people who might actually walk through your door or book your service. A well planned giveaway can do exactly that, and it does not need a big budget. Here are five steps to run one that works.

1. Pick a prize that only your ideal customer wants

An iPad or a gift card to a big retailer will attract everyone, including people who will never buy from you. Instead, give away your own product, service, or a bundle built around what you sell. A salon can offer a color and cut, a restaurant can offer dinner for two, and a boutique can offer a styled outfit. When the prize is relevant, every entry is a possible customer.

2. Keep the entry rules simple

The more steps you ask for, the fewer people finish them. Ask people to do one or two things, such as follow your account and comment with a tag or an answer to a question. Tagging a friend is a great way to reach new local audiences, but keep it to one friend so it does not feel like a chore. Write the rules in plain language at the top of your caption.

3. Partner with a neighboring business

Teaming up with a complementary local business doubles the prize and doubles the reach. A fitness studio and a smoothie shop, or a florist and a wedding venue, can each promote the giveaway to their own followers. Both businesses gain new followers who already live nearby and already spend money in town.

4. Follow the platform rules and be transparent

Each platform has its own promotion guidelines, and breaking them can get a post removed or an account flagged. State clearly that the giveaway is not sponsored or endorsed by the platform, list the start and end dates, name how the winner will be chosen, and mention any eligibility limits such as local residents only. Use a random picker so the draw is fair, and announce the winner publicly.

5. Follow up so the new followers stick around

The giveaway is only the start. Within a day of the winner announcement, post something helpful or welcoming for your new audience, like a behind the scenes look or a limited offer for everyone who entered. Reply to the comments, send a thank you to participants, and keep posting consistently. This is what turns one week of attention into long term customers.

A giveaway works best when it is part of a bigger plan, not a one time stunt. If you want help designing a promotion that grows your following with real local customers, contact Vero Beach Social Media at curtis@verobeachsocialmedia.com and let's plan your next campaign together.
